THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF CHANIA
It is situated at 21 Halidon Street and is housed in the temple of St Franciscus. The exhibition consists of large main unities. In the first half of the exhibition area we see the finds of the post-neolithic era and those of the copper era. In the second hall, till the far end of the hall, antiquities of the historical era are displayed. The tour starts from the left to the right from the point of view of the incomer. In the showcases on the left there are vases and post-neolithic ceramics (3.400-2.900) as Far as the post-minoan era (1200 b.c.), ranging from the cave of Plativolas to Kerainia and from the cave Mameloukou of Kydonias Gardens. Also vases, ceramics and small objects, which were unearthed chiefly with the Greek-Swedish excavation (around the middle of the sixties and which is still going on). It is worth giving special attention to the archives of tablets with Linear A Scripture and clay discs and seals.
One of the most important discoveries of minoan archaeology as regards the theme of its representation is a clay seal, which depicts a leader or a god on top of a multilevel building composite, which probably is a minoan palace (1.500-1400 b.c.). This is followed by showcases of vases of the Geometric era (1000-700 b.c.) known as geometric from its decorative designs of the vases mainly from cemeteries of the borough (Gavalomouri and Vouves Kissamou - Modi Kydonias).
Next toward the eastern side of the museum there are statues and sepulchral pillars of Hellenistic and Roman times, from various parts of the borough and mainly from the Aslclepeion of Lissos, From the Diktineo, statue of Diana, head of the emperor Hadrian from the Roman Kissamos.
In the same place one can see mosaics from the city of Hernia (3rd century a.d.), which represent Poseidon liberating the nymph Amimone, daughter of the king of Argos, Danaos, from the hands of a Satyr, and also mosaics with representations of Dionysos and Ariadne in Naxos. In the showcases, which are on the right northern side of the museum there are excellent archaic idols from Axos of Rethymnon, as well as Hellenistic and Roman idols from various parts of Hernia reddish and black-shaded vases of the post-classic period (4th century b.c.) from the cemetery of Falasarna and from the town of Hernia, and hellentistic and Roman vases and idols from the cemetery of Tarra. Also glassware vases and lanterns of different eras from various parts of Hernia.
In special showcases coins of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times are on display. On the northern side and towards the exit to the courtyard of the Museum as we come down two steps there are showcases with seals and tablets with linear A and B Scriptures From the town of Hernia. Also in other showcases in the same area there are necklaces from glass beads and from stoneware, copper hairpins and needles, small copper objects, like the copper arrow and the copper idol of an animal from a temple which is found in the ravine of Samaria of the roman period, various jewels (silver, gold, copper).
On the northwestern side there are jars of post-Minoan years as there are vases, a few ritualistic, most of which come from the cemetery of Kydonia, which is situated under today's city of Hernia. Special attention should be given to the compass with a representation of a guitarist and a double vase of ritualistic character which is decorated with birds (14001200 b.c.). There is also a temporary exhibition of urns from the post Minoan III A/B (1400-1200 b.c.) necropolis of the Armenons of Rethymnon with very beautiful representations.
In the courtyard of the Museum in a beautiful garden with flowers there arc various sculptures, a marble lion from the period of Venetian dominion, as also a marble fountain -with lions heads, which -was set up in the Venetian period in Fountain square at the port of Chania. Also there is a beautiful Turkish fountain.
NAVAL MUSEUM
On the site of Firkas is the naval museum of Chania. You can see nautical maps, gravures and representations of ships.
Folklore MUSEUM
It is situated at 46B Halidon Street in the Arcade of the Catholic Church. It is a private museum which will give you a vivid picture of the 18th, 19th and 20th century of the island. you can see high quality craftsmanship in laces, ornamented covers and embroidery.
HISTORICAL ARCHIVES OF CRETE
It was founded in 1932 and is situated at 20 Sfakianakis Street. You can see the archives of the Cretan State, manuscripts, prints, circulars of 1822-1841, newspapers, the archives of the 1821-1832 revolution and the archives of the revolution Of 1866. You can also see various private archives as well as those of the International occupation and the Turkish Administration in Crete.
The first official chemical laboratory in Greece was founded about a hundred years ago in Chania (Crete) by the efforts of dr. Vamvacas. Very efficiently equipped, the laboratory was charged with the control of olive oil, wine, beer, milk, butter, honey, flour and soap, in order to maintain the high quality of Cretan products.
Modernization of the damaged institution after World War II allowed the precious old instrumentation to be transferred to a place very similar to the ancient one. Today the museum can be considered as a typical chemical laboratory of the 1890s: the furniture is carefully renovated, glass and copper apparatus waits for the scientists experienced hand, reagents and drugs are stored in the appropriate cupboards, the specialized library with its two hundred volumes could answer any question. Pictures taken from old manuals explain the way the analytical instrumentation was used.
The museum is hosted in the building of the Authorities for Chemical Control and can be visited on working days (9-1). El. Venizelou street tel. 42504.
