The Effects of Stress on Your Health and What You Can Do Naturopathically to Deal!

[ad_1]

What Is Stress?

According to Mosby's Medical Dictionary, stress is "any emotional, physical, social, economic or other factor that requires a response or change." We can therefore assume from that definition that stress can come in any shape or form that disturbs the pattern or routine in our day to day lives that we have become accustomed to - an event that creates a ripple in our pond of calm. What is more interesting here is the fact that stress is not necessarily always negative. The thing to note here is that it is the 'change' that is considered the stress. Divorce and death of spouse are highest on the list of stressors, but the birth of a baby, the changing of jobs, houses, financial status, responsibilities at work, sleeping habits, eating habits - those are also stresses due to change. Events that may not seem like they are 'stressful', such as a promotion in your current job can be interpreted by our bodies as stress - which is why we need to be mindful of what exactly stress is and how it does affect our minds, bodies and souls.

Physiological Effects of stress -

Thousands of years ago, when human beings were much more nomadic creatures, the physiological stress response was vital to survival. When exposed to a stressful situation, our adrenal glands start pumping out 'stress hormones' more commonly known as cortisol, cortisone and catecholamines (epinephrine and norephinephrine) which create the physical "Fight or Flight" response. Blood would be shunted away from organs that were non-vital to the 'flight' response, such as our digestive tract and sex organs and our blood pressure and heart rate would skyrocket, enabling an increased rush of blood to our larger muscle groups so that we could run away from death. The blood would also thicken in response to stress so that if we got wounded, we would clot much faster and not bleed to death. Our pupils would dilate in order to see further distances. There would be an increase of glucose being released into our bloodstream in order to provide energy for the muscles, and eventually our liver would start to release cholesterol into the blood to provide long-term fuel once the glucose was used up. These were all useful responses...back then. Now, however, our brain cannot differentiate between the stress of an argument with a partner, discontent at work and the impending attack of a woolly mammoth. The body needs to exert some sort of physical response in order to put these hormones into action and thus release them from the body - such as running away from the woolly mammoth. But in modern days (and with no woolly mammoths in sight) there is no immediate outlet for this hormonal response in our bodies - and most of us end up sitting and tense our muscles in front of the computer screen and try to 'deal with it'.

The Three Stages of Stress:

1) Alarm Reaction or Fight/Flight Response

The body immediately responds to stress. Release of cortisol and catecholamines in the body, glucose is released, immune system depresses, increased heart rate, quickened shallower breaths, dilated pupils, clammy/cold skin, dry mouth

2) Resistance/Adaptation Response

With prolonged stress and sustained levels of cortisol and catecholamines, the body begins to adapt to that level of stress and interpret it as Normal. You body starts to work overtime in order to enhance immune function - but this is not sustainable. Did you ever notice that during exam times or deadlines, you're able to work on overdrive and not get sick - but once the exams are over, or the deadline has been met, you fall ill??

3) Exhaustion

Your immune system pretty much shuts down. This is known in the medical world as Adrenal Exhaustion. The body eventually loses its ability to keep up with the demands that the stress is placing on it, and when it reaches its limit, you collapse. This then results in the 'stress-related' diseases.

What are the Effects of Stress on Modern Day Humans?

What do these physiological responses do to us in the modern world? What happens when these high levels of cortisol, cortisone and catecholamines are constantly in our bloodstream with no proper release mechanism? This is by no means a complete list, but here are a few things to put things into perspective:

Immune System

The high levels of cortisol, cortisone and catecholamines cause the immune system to weaken, making it harder to fight off a simple cold. Do you notice that when you are stressed you get sick much easier?

Cardiovascular System

Increased blood pressure and heart rate, which back then, as I had mentioned earlier, was useful for the 'flight' response, but now it can just lead to cardiovascular disease.

The blood also thickens to carry more oxygen to the muscles but today, the result is increased risk for heart attack, stroke or embolus.

The liver releases cholesterol into the bloodstream in order to supply more long-term energy to the muscles once the glucose levels have been used up. Today, because there is no need for 'prolonged energy' on the muscles (unless you are an athlete in training) the cholesterol gets deposited in the blood vessels - leading to increased heart disease.

Sex and Libido

Sex hormones are reduced - leading to reduced libido and possibly infertility issues

Digestive Tract and Function

Digestive tract starts to shut down. The stress response causes blood to be shunted to your muscles of action, hence the 'flight' part of fight or flight response. When blood is diverted to your muscles away from the organs that are not essential for physical activity, such as your stomach and gastro-intestinal tract, they receive a lowered blood supply and thus have lowered function. Eating while under stress can cause indigestion, bloating, nausea, cramping, constipation and or diarrhea. The long-term effects are much more grim: gastric ulcers, gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach), which then increases the risk of stomach cancer.

Blood Sugar

The release of glucose (sugar) into the bloodstream to provide energy to the muscles for flight causes hypoglycemia (lowered blood sugar) or an increased insulin demand on the pancreas, potentially aggravating diabetes.

Things we can DO NATURALLY to manage stress:

Exercise

This one is obvious. You need a physical outlet in order to release the stress hormones that are being released into your bloodstream. Much like pre-historic man would run away from danger, thus utilizing the jump in blood levels of catecholamines and cortisol, modern day man needs a similar outlet. Regular exercise (about 2-3 times a week, for at least 30 minutes) will reduce the effects of stress on your body. If you can, do your exercising outdoors - 20 minutes of direct sunlight on your skin (and thus elevating your vitamin D levels) will do wonders to lift your mood!

Diet

The body seems to require increased levels of Vitamin C and the B vitamins for tissue repair during times of stress. Research has also shown that stress leads to overeating in those who are normally above average weight or underrating for those who are naturally thin. This wreaks havoc on the metabolism and weight management, which when unmonitored, can lead to Type 2 Diabetes, malnutrition, fatigue and bone density loss. Make sure that you eat a properly balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, protein in the form of lean meats and legumes and your 8 glasses of water a day.

Relaxation

Do something you enjoy - treat yourself to something nice, whether it's a cup of tea, a hot bath infused with essential oils, a new cd, a trashy novel, a movie...make sure you schedule in time for YOU. In this day and age where people often put themselves last on the list of things 'to do' if at all, taking some 'me' time is essential for stress management.

Supplementation

Even with a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise and the occasional spa treatment, managing stress in this day and age can still be a challenge. There are many supplements that can be used in order to combat the effects of stress on your organs, your hormones and your emotional ability to handle the stress - but it is best to consult with your local Naturopathic Doctor to find the supplements that are best suited to you and your needs.

Laughter

Life is too short to take so seriously. Laughing releases endorphins, or 'happy hormones' into your bloodstream, much like exercising, chocolate or sex. Make sure you laugh every single day.

Technical Indicators Will Make You a Successful Trader

[ad_1]

Trading indicators will help you predict the market behavior and, by default, make you a better trader. No trading chart should be created without some technical indicators to help a trader with his/her decision. In most cases, these technical indicators use old mathematical formulas applied to the current price compared to market conditions such as volume or momentum to determine the right direction of the price.

The technical indicators for Forex trading are divided in various groups. Among them, a momentum indicator can help determine the currency price direction. A volume indicator can also help determine price movement. Implementation of these indicators in technical analysis help traders determine the direction of currency prices and when to enter a trade.

Momentum indicators help determine when a trend is coming to an end and a new trend, more likely, is developing. Some of the most commonly used indicator are the commodity channel index (CCI), relative strength index (RSI), stochastic oscillator, and changes momentum oscillator. Relative strength index usually is responsible for the uptrend and downtrend move relation measurements. These measurements are indicated in three distinguished categories. This includes an overbought currency level that is from 70 upwards whereas at 30 or below, is an indication that the currency is oversold. The role of volatility, as an indicator, is to describe the effect of fluctuation on a currency price as it compares to the current price. According to research, the volatility indicators can be an excellent to help determine the state of market activity.

Currently, the best volatility indicators you can find in the market are chaikins volatility and Bollinger bands among others. They are able to provide and measure trend directions to the traders. This can be achieved in many ways which include a linear regression indicator and moving averages. According to research, a trader's perception towards these indicators signals will, however, matter as they may provide false signals on occasion.

The ultimate indicators will comprise of forecast oscillator, simple moving average, MACD, and, parabolic SAR. Just to mention, in a previous article, we discussed MACD at length.

The Volume Indicators

They are used for different functions in trading. This includes confirming trends and pressure in buying, selling and many more. In this case, the increase in volume is what will always determine the increase in price. A trader is, hereby, granted a chance to reversal if in case there is lack of indicators to confirm the volume. Preferably, it is important to use demand index, Chaikin volatility, and volume ROC for better results. They are stable with less fluctuation on the currency price, thus are recommendable for accuracy in your trading.

Trading Price Action - Easy to Spot Profitable Trading Set Ups for Huge Profits!

[ad_1]

In this article, I am going to look at some trading set ups which are easy to spot and show you how to trade them for profit. Let's take a look at trading price action, with some simple set ups in more detail and look at the logic of why they work.

Here I am going to look at 3 simple set ups which can make any trader huge profits and you will see them occur frequently and they offer you fantastic profit potential with low risk.

1. Trading a Switch from low Volatility to High Volatility

Currency markets are volatile but not all the time and you will often see a currency pair trade in tight ranges for a few days to a few weeks but this never lasts for long, as soon as the currency becomes more volatile - go with the direction volatility is taking you.

A great chart set up is the symmetrical triangle, were volatility drops and the triangle becomes narrower and wait for a break from it. You will see this chart formation a lot and it's one of the most reliable ones to trade.

The logic behind the switch is the supply and demand equation which was in balance has now changed and the way to go is with the break either to the upside or downside. Once you get a switch from low to high volatility, chances are the new trend will continue.

2. Bull Market Reversal Day

A bull market reversal is when a currency has been in a bull trend and you suddenly get a reversal - the market makes a new high and settles below the previous days low. Don't trade until the next day just in case traders come in to buy the dip. Instead until the open of the next day and see if prices are down and if they are - get short.

The logic behind this trade is - the buying power is over after the market makes a new high and if it opens lower the next day, weak speculators will be hit on stop which will lead to accelerated selling.

3. The Breakout no One Agrees With

Sometimes you will see a price break through a critical level of resistance and there seems to be no reason for it in the news and the news and all other traders are bearish. If you ever see a break of major resistance when no one agrees, buy the break and it will probably develop into a fantastic trend.

Over 90% of traders lose - so if they don't agree with the break, there probably wrong and its time to get on board. The biggest and best trends, very often come out of nowhere and this has been so throughout trading history. So don't worry why the break is occurring - just trade it for profit.

Final Words

The above are three simple set ups anyone can spot and anyone can trade for profit, by just looking at price action sure, there simple but they will make you a lot of money.

Tips for Avoiding the Common Errors That the New Bitcoin Traders Make

[ad_1]

Investors from around the globe are trying to cash in on the volatile Forex market, by trading with the crypto-currency, Bitcoin. Well, it is quite easy to get started with online trading, but it is important for you to know that there are risks involved that you cannot afford to overlook.

As with any of the speculative or exchange markets, Bitcoin trading is also a dicey venture, which can possibly cost you a lot of money, especially if you don't get it right. Therefore, it is essential for you to know about the risks involved, before deciding to get started with it.

If you are a newbie, who is interested in trading with Bitcoin, then you will need to first understand the basics of trade and investing.

Avoid the common errors that new traders generally tend to make

Invest wisely

Any kind of financial investment can bring losses, instead of profits. Similarly, with the highly unstable Bitcoin market, you can expect both, profits and losses. It is all about making the right decisions at the right time.

Most of the beginners tend to lose money by making the wrong decisions that are generally driven by greed and poor analytical skills. Experts say that you should not venture into trading, if you are not ready to lose money. Basically, such an approach helps you in coping up mentally for the worst possibilities.

Diversify the portfolio

First, successful traders diversify their portfolios. Risk exposure increases if most of your funds are allocated for a single asset. It becomes harder for you to cover the losses from other assets. You cannot afford to lose more money than you invested, so avoid placing more funds on limited assets. It will help you sustain the negative trades to quite an extent.

Secondly, putting in more cash than you can afford, will also cloud your sound decision making abilities. In most cases, you will be compelled to opt for 'desperate selling' when market declines a little. Rather than holding through the market dip, the investor who has over-invested on the trade, is bound to panic. The person will feel the urge sell off the holding for a low price, in an attempt to lessen the losses.

You will also be losing more cash, when market recovers. It is because you will have to buy the same holding back, but at higher price.

Set goals - Emotions make you blind

Goal setting for each transaction is vital when you trade Bitcoin. It helps you stay level-headed even in the extremely volatile conditions. Therefore, you will need to first determine the price to stop your losses.

The same rule also applies for profits, especially if you let your greed take over. The benefit of setting goals is that you can easily prevent making the decisions based on emotions.

Instead, you should work towards improving your skills for reading the charts and conducting the market analysis. It is also advisable for new traders to close their losing positions in 24 hours, so as to avoid paying the recurring interest.

2008 DSLR Review - The Hits and Misses of the Year

[ad_1]

2008 was an interesting year for DSLR's and photographers in general, even if you ignore the ultra-high end announcements from Leica, Hassleblad and Red. The three main players in the DSLR space (Nikon and Canon each with around 40% market share, and Sony with around 10%) all launched milestone cameras. Below we'll detail their hits, and misses.

Nikon

After their groundbreaking releases in 2007 with the Nikon D3 and D300, they set the bar high for 2008, but in general didn't disappoint with four new bodies:

Nikon D60

While not revolutionary, the Nikon D60 replaced the D40x in Nikons consumer lineup, in a smaller, better package, becoming one of the smallest and lightest DSLR's ever made.

Nikon D700

Coming almost as a complete surprise, the Nikon D700 was launched mid summer, containing the 12 megapixel full frame sensor out of the flagship D3, but with a body similar to the D300. At $ 3,000, this camera showed Nikons commitment to FX, and the camera instantly became the choice for many pros that didn't need the weather sealing or the advanced features of the D3 (for example wedding photographers).

However within months of its release, the Sony A900 came out with a 24 megapixel full frame sensor for the same MSRP, and the Canon 5D Mark II came out with a 21 megapixel full frame sensor and 1080p HD Video, for $ 2,700.

While the D700 remains the most complete package (best autofocus, arguable the best metering, and for the vast majority 12 megapixels is plenty), it has come under severe pressure from its higher megapixel rivals. Just four months after its release, the street prices have dropped 25%, down to the $ 2,300 range for a USA model.

Nikon D90

Replacing the D80 in Nikons lineup, the Nikon D90 took the sensor from the respected D300, improved on it slightly, added video, and packaged it in a smaller, lighter body with scene modes and a more basic autofocus and metering.

The Nikon D90 was also the worlds first DSLR to feature HD Video capture, with its 720p / 24 fps mode. However, a few weeks later Canon announced a much more comprehensive video offering with it's Canon 5D Mark II, and video remains the weakest feature on the D90, lacking autofocus and giving very little control over key elements like exposure.

At $ 999, this helped firm up Nikons consumer lineup, by creating an outstandingly capable advanced consumer DSLR in the Nikon D90.

Nikon D3x

After years of rumor, Nikon finally announced it's high megapixel camera, the 24 megapixel Nikon D3x.

The camera immediately caused a backlash with its $ 8,000 price point, which at the time of release was about double the street price of the Nikon D3. This the uproar was only fuelled further, when it was revealed the only significant differences between the D3 and the D3x were the sensor and a slightly improved EXPEED processor, combined with the fact Sony can produce a DSLR with the same size / megapixel sensor for a mere $ 3,000.

This camera is aimed squarely at the studio / landscape photographer, and initial tests have shown that the sensor is cleaner at high ISO's than the Sony (but comparable to the 5D Mark II, which has fewer megapixels). So while it's clearly an impressive camera, it remains to be seen how many photographers can actually justify the price tag.

Canon

In addition to some entry level DSLR's, can had two big releases in 2008.

Canon EOS 50D

Replacing the 40D, the Canon 50D featured a 15 megapixel 1.6x crop sensor, making it the highest pixel density available today (equivalent to a 39 megapixel full frame sensor).

However the initial reception hasn't been especially positive. Because of the high pixel density, the camera suffers more from the effects of diffraction, doesn't have the high ISO ability many hoped it would, and shows up issues with lenses more than any previous model. Despite this, it remains a solid camera at its current street price of just over $ 1,000.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Probably the most significant release of the year, the Canon 5D replacement features a 21 megapixel Full Frame sensor, ISO capabilities similar to the new Nikon D3x, and it became the first DSLR to feature full 1080p HD Video capture. Despite some initial problems (like the infamous "black dot" problem), for $ 2,700 Canon provides an amazing feature set, and appears to have hit a home run with what is arguably the best prosumer package on the market today.

Sony

After solidifying its consumer lineup, Sony went after the prosumer market with the Sony A900 featuring a 24-megapixel full frame sensor for under $ 3,000.

Sony A900

The camera lacks basic features expected on today's DSLR's like Live View, but the next camera available with 24 megapixels is the $ 8,000 Nikon D3x. However it's biggest competition comes from the Canon 5D Mark II, which has a slightly lower resolution at 21 megapixels, but more than makes up for it with its lower $ 2,700 price tag, full 1080p HD Video mode and features like Live View.

While clearly an impressive camera at a solid price point, unless you really need the extra resolution, it would be very hard to pick the Sony over the Canon.

Summary

With groundbreaking cameras in the Nikon D3x, Nikon D90, Canon 50D and Canon 5D Mark II, 2008 solidified full frame sensors in the marketplace, witnessed a continued push towards higher megapixels, and saw the introduction of video on DSLR's.

Looking forward, 2009 should be an interesting year. With negative economic conditions and fierce competition for market share, we should see prices drop, and features like video mature making for some interesting, if not groundbreaking cameras in the near future.

Agile User Stories - A Recipe for Exceptional Stories

[ad_1]

INVEST in your user stories

Why do so many of us battle with writing good stories?

I often see people who struggle with user story slicing and dicing. "Is it too big", "where should I slice it?", "can this be included in that user story as part of the same user journey" are questions that I'm faced with daily. And naturally so. Many of us come from processes that worked the other way around. I.e. back then it wasn't required to think so hard about the value of a requirement, because we will probably only see this change being implemented in two years. If it isn't what we need, we will raise a change request.

Use training wheels first

Fortunately in Agile methods we think of the value that the story we are pondering up will derive for the customer. If we are lucky enough we have the customer on the team with us to take much of the guess-work out of this value question. But many don't have this luxury and need a set of practice wheels while getting acquainted to the way of writing good user stories.

INVEST criteria for healthy stories

When I train people new to Agile on the practices of writing user stories, I am satisfied when they are comfortable with the INVEST criteria for good story writing. Let's dive into the meaning.

I - Independent: We must be able to swap stories out quickly without causing a ripple effect of replanning. Stories should be free of any sequence so that they can be individually prioritized.

N - Negotiable: Stories are reminders to have conversations and should not be seen as a signed-off contract. The actual result of a user story is the collection of conversations that occurred during the sprint between customer (or product owner), developer and tester at a minimum. Always remember that the goal is to meet the customer need and not to develop each user story to the letter. If you prefer the latter then get back to waterfall.

V - Valuable: Every story must yield value to either a customer or an internal process like non functional requirements. If it doesn't add value it mustn't be done. Period.

E - Estimable: A story must be sizable so that it can be planned for. If it is inestimable then it is probably too large or too many unknowns exist. Break it down more and pin down some assumptions if you can't figure out all ambiguity.

S - Small: A story should be as small as possible but still deliver value. Having a constant stream of same-sized work packages through the system aids our predictability and reduces variance. Do the simplest thing and then stop. Steer clear of gold-plating at all cost.

T - Testable: If we cannot test a story then we should reconsider if it's a user story at all. Otherwise how would it ever be done if we can't measure it against defined acceptance criteria? Acceptance criteria being defined upfront proves that the user story is testable and encourages collaboration around the story early on.

Putting it all into practice

The proof is in the pudding. For your next user story workshop/ backlog refinement session, practice writing user stories with INVEST in mind. When in doubt ask "how will I know it's done".
